Dronedarone falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Saigon Cinnamon interacts with.

Theoretically, Saigon cinnamon might cause additive effects when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
Saigon cinnamon contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.

Here's the thing to know about pairing Saigon cinnamon with dronedarone (Multaq). This isn't about cinnamon changing your dronedarone levels. Instead, it's a liver concern. Dronedarone already carries a warning about possible liver injury, and Saigon cinnamon (a cassia type) is high in coumarin, which can stress the liver too in sensitive people or at large supplement doses. Stacking two things that can be hard on the liver is the worry here.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not solid human proof. A sprinkle on your oatmeal or toast is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cinnamon capsules taken daily are a different story. Watch for signs like unusual tiredness, yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, or belly pain, and check with your pharmacist before starting any cinnamon supplement.

Saigon cinnamon is a flavorful spice from a Cinnamomum tree grown mainly in Vietnam, and it is a type of 'cassia' cinnamon. Some people use it for blood sugar and digestion, but the human evidence is limited. Because cassia cinnamons like this one are high in a compound called coumarin, regularly taking large supplement doses may be hard on the liver in sensitive people, so use food amounts and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated products.

What Is Dronedarone Used For?

Brand name: Multaq

Multaq (dronedarone) tablets are used to reduce the risk of being hospitalized for atrial fibrillation (AF) — an irregular, often rapid heart rhythm. It is approved for adults who are currently in normal sinus rhythm but have a history of paroxysmal (comes and goes) or persistent atrial fibrillation.

Multaq is not appropriate for everyone with AF. It must not be used in people with permanent atrial fibrillation or in those with recently worsened heart failure requiring hospitalization — these patients face a doubled risk of death, stroke, and hospitalization if they take it.
