HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Lamivudine, Zidovudine
Lamivudine, Zidovudine falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Saigon Cinnamon interacts with.
Saigon cinnamon contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Combivir (lamivudine and zidovudine): this isn't a case of cinnamon changing how the drug works or how much of it stays in your body. The concern is simpler. Both this HIV medicine and Saigon cinnamon can, in some situations, be tough on the liver. Combivir already carries a known risk of liver strain, so stacking it with something that also stresses the liver could, in theory, add up.
Honestly, this is a theoretical worry based mostly on the coumarin in cassia cinnamon, and it mainly applies to large, concentrated supplement doses, not the sprinkle you'd use in cooking. Still, watch for warning signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and chat with your pharmacist before taking cinnamon capsules.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Lamivudine, Zidovudine page
“Combivir (lamivudine plus zidovudine) treats HIV, and this list deserves real care, mostly because so many entries can compound strain on the liver. Zidovudine already asks a lot of that organ, and 38 of the 60 supplements on file, from ashwagandha to comfrey, add liver risk of their own.”

About Saigon Cinnamon
What is Saigon Cinnamon?
- Blood sugar support
- Digestive upset
- Antioxidant support
- Flavoring and culinary use
- Antimicrobial
Saigon cinnamon is a flavorful spice from a Cinnamomum tree grown mainly in Vietnam, and it is a type of 'cassia' cinnamon. Some people use it for blood sugar and digestion, but the human evidence is limited. Because cassia cinnamons like this one are high in a compound called coumarin, regularly taking large supplement doses may be hard on the liver in sensitive people, so use food amounts and check with your pharmacist before taking concentrated products.
