Tegaserod falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Same interacts with.

Taking SAMe with serotonergic drugs might increase the risk of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects.
SAMe has serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with SAMe might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. In one case report, SAMe 100 mg intramuscularly was given daily with clomipramine (Anafranil) 25 mg per day. When the clomipramine dose was increased to 75 mg per day the patient experienced serotonin syndrome about 48-72 hours later, requiring hospitalization.

Here's the thing to know about Tegaserod (Zelnorm): it works on serotonin receptors in your gut to help things move along and ease constipation from IBS-C. SAM-e also nudges serotonin activity in the body. When you stack two products that both lean on serotonin, the worry is that you could push serotonin signaling too far.

In rare cases, too much serotonin activity leads to what we call serotonin syndrome, with symptoms like restlessness, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or confusion. I want to be honest that this concern is mostly theoretical and based on a single case report with a different drug, so it's far from certain. Still, before you pair SAM-e with Tegaserod, please check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Tegaserod Used For?

Brand name: Zelnorm

  • Tegaserod is used in women younger than 65 years of age to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C; a condition that causes stomach pain or cramps, bloating, and infrequent or difficult passage of stools). Tegaserod is in a class of medications called serotonin agonists. It works by improving muscle movement and increasing production of fluid in the bowels.
