Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Aripiprazole
Aripiprazole falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Same interacts with.
SAMe has serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with SAMe might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. In one case report, SAMe 100 mg intramuscularly was given daily with clomipramine (Anafranil) 25 mg per day. When the clomipramine dose was increased to 75 mg per day the patient experienced serotonin syndrome about 48-72 hours later, requiring hospitalization.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: SAM-e gently nudges up serotonin activity in your brain, and so does aripiprazole to a smaller degree. Stacking two things that touch the serotonin system could, in theory, raise the odds of too much serotonin building up. That's the concern here, not aripiprazole piling up in your body.
Honestly, this is a soft signal. The evidence is anecdotal, and the one documented case involved a different drug given by injection. Still, it's worth knowing the warning signs of serotonin overload: feeling agitated or restless, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or fever. If you ever felt those, you'd want help right away. Please don't start or stop either one on your own. Check with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially since you may be managing bipolar disorder.
