In vitro, sorrel has been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the situation with sorrel and defibrotide (Defitelio). Defibrotide already works to keep blood from clotting and to protect blood vessels, and it's given in the hospital to very sick patients with serious liver problems after a stem-cell transplant. In lab dishes, sorrel has slowed down platelets (the tiny cells that help blood clot). The worry is that stacking sorrel on top of defibrotide could, in theory, add to its blood-thinning action and raise the chance of bleeding or bruising.

That said, this is only test-tube evidence, and the platelet effect has never been shown in real people. Defibrotide isn't a prodrug, so nothing needs to be "switched on" here. Since this medicine is used in a closely monitored hospital setting, always let the care team know about any supplements before adding them.

What Is Defibrotide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Defitelio

Defitelio (defibrotide injection) is used to treat hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) — also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) — in adult and pediatric patients. This is a serious condition where small blood vessels in the liver become blocked, most often after a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT).

Defitelio is specifically indicated when VOD is accompanied by kidney dysfunction or pulmonary (lung) dysfunction, making it a treatment for one of the most severe forms of this complication.
