Sildenafil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Syrian Rue interacts with.

Theoretically, Syrian rue might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Syrian rue contains beta-carboline alkaloids, including harmine, harmol, and harmane. In vitro research suggests that these beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes.

Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear sildenafil (Viagra, Revatio) out of your system. Syrian Rue contains compounds that, at least in lab studies, can slow that enzyme down. If that happens in real life, sildenafil could hang around longer and build up, which may turn up its effects and side effects: a bigger drop in blood pressure, headache, flushing, a stuffy nose, dizziness, or visual changes.

I want to be honest that this is theoretical, based on test-tube findings rather than people, so we don't know how strong it really is. Still, because sildenafil already lowers blood pressure, I'd play it safe. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing these, and never adjust your medication on your own.

What is Syrian Rue?

Syrian Rue (Peganum harmala) is a traditional plant whose seeds contain potent compounds called harmala alkaloids, including MAO-inhibiting harmine and harmaline. There is little reliable human evidence that it safely treats any condition, and it carries real risks of toxicity, so it is not recommended for self-treatment. What Is Sildenafil Used For?

Brand name: Revatio

Sildenafil treats two distinct conditions depending on the product. Viagra (tablet) and Vybrique (dissolving oral film) are approved for erectile dysfunction (ED) — difficulty getting or keeping an erection. Generic sildenafil tablets and oral film are also approved for ED.

Revatio and several generic sildenafil products (tablets, oral suspension, and injection) are used for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs — in adults to improve exercise ability and slow the disease from getting worse. Revatio oral suspension and injection are also approved for PAH in children ages 1 to 17.
