Tangerine + Glecaprevir, Pibrentasvir
Glecaprevir, Pibrentasvir brand name: Mavyret.
Tangerine has a minor interaction with Glecaprevir, Pibrentasvir. In vitro, tangeretin, a constituent of tangerine, induces a 52% increase in the metabolism of midazolam by cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4).

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Glecaprevir, Pibrentasvir
Glecaprevir, Pibrentasvir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Tangerine interacts with.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include amitriptyline (Elavil), amiodarone (Cordarone), citalopram (Celexa), felodipine (Plendil), lansoprazole (Prevacid), ondansetron (Zofran), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), sertraline (Zoloft), sibutramine (Meridia), and many others.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Good news here: the worry about tangerines and Mavyret (glecaprevir and pibrentasvir) is mostly theoretical. A compound in tangerine called tangeretin sped up the CYP3A4 enzyme in a lab dish, but when actual people drank tangerine juice, it did not meaningfully change how the body processed a CYP3A4 drug. So the real-world signal is weak.
In theory, if tangerine nudged that enzyme to work faster, it could lower levels of Mavyret a bit, and you want full strength to clear the hepatitis C virus. But this is rated minor and unlikely, and Mavyret is not a prodrug, so eating tangerines as food should be fine. If you regularly use concentrated tangerine extracts or peel supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Glecaprevir, Pibrentasvir page
“Mavyret (glecaprevir and pibrentasvir) is a short course of pills meant to cure hepatitis C, so I read its supplement list with real caution. Nearly everything on it can shift how much of the drug reaches your blood, mostly through the CYP3A4 enzyme or the P-glycoprotein transporter that handles it.”

About Tangerine
What is Tangerine?
- Source of vitamin C
- Digestive support
- Aromatherapy and relaxation
- Cough and phlegm (traditional)
- Skin and flavoring uses
Tangerine is a sweet citrus fruit that is a good source of vitamin C and other nutrients, and is widely enjoyed as food. While the peel and essential oil are used in traditional medicine and aromatherapy, strong human evidence for specific health benefits beyond basic nutrition is limited. Enjoying tangerines as part of a balanced diet is generally safe for most people.
