Tarragon and Treprostinil (Inh)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Treprostinil (Inh)

Treprostinil (Inh) falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Tarragon interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that tarragon extract inhibits platelet aggregation and adhesion. Theoretically, tarragon might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about inhaled treprostinil (Tyvaso): besides relaxing the blood vessels in your lungs, it also makes your platelets less sticky, so it acts a bit like a blood thinner on its own. Tarragon, in lab studies, seems to do something similar by keeping platelets from clumping together. Stack the two and, in theory, you could bruise more easily or bleed a little more than usual.

I want to be honest though, this concern comes only from test-tube research, not real people, so it's a soft signal rather than a proven risk. Sprinkling tarragon on your food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated extracts or the essential oil are a different story. Before adding any tarragon supplement, run it past your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Treprostinil (Inh) page

“Inhaled treprostinil (Tyvaso) relaxes blood vessels in the lungs to treat pulmonary hypertension, and it also blunts platelet clotting, which is why this list of 275 ingredients warrants real vigilance rather than a shrug. Two themes cover almost everything.”

About Tarragon

What is Tarragon?

Tarragon
  • Digestive upset
  • Appetite stimulation
  • Sleep and mild restlessness
  • Toothache and oral discomfort
  • Blood sugar support (preliminary)
  • Culinary flavoring

Tarragon is a flavorful culinary herb that has been used in traditional medicine for digestion, sleep, and other complaints, but solid human evidence for any health benefit is lacking. Amounts used in cooking are generally considered safe, while concentrated extracts and the essential oil should be used cautiously because tarragon contains estragole, a compound studied for possible safety concerns. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using tarragon as a supplement.

About Treprostinil Oral Inhalation

What Is Treprostinil Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand name: Tyvaso

Treprostinil oral inhalation is used to treat two serious lung conditions that raise pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs. It helps improve how much physical activity you can do.

Tyvaso inhalation solution and Tyvaso DPI are both indicated to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH; WHO Group 1) and pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD; WHO Group 3). Clinical studies establishing effectiveness in PAH primarily included patients with moderate symptoms (NYHA Class III) whose PAH was idiopathic, heritable, or related to connective tissue disease. Studies in PH-ILD primarily included patients with idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema, or connective tissue disease-related lung disease.
