Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the worry runs in the opposite direction from what you might expect. Your Triumeq (abacavir, dolutegravir, lamivudine) is not changing your thyroid extract. Instead, taking the two close together can keep your body from absorbing the thyroid hormone properly, so your thyroid product may simply work less well. That can leave you feeling sluggish, tired, cold, or noticing weight changes if your thyroid levels drift low.

The good news is this is a minor, easy-to-manage timing issue, not a dangerous reaction. Thyroid hormone absorbs best on an empty stomach, so separating it from your HIV medicine and food usually solves it. Because keeping HIV treatment steady matters, and over-the-counter thyroid extract is unpredictable, please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing these.

What Is Abacavir, Dolutegravir, and Lamivudine Used For?

Brand name: Triumeq

Abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine together treat HIV-1 infection. As the fixed-dose combination product Triumeq, this combination is approved for adults and for children aged at least 3 months who weigh at least 6 kg (about 13 lbs).

Triumeq alone is not recommended for people whose HIV has developed resistance to integrase inhibitors (a class of antivirals), because the dolutegravir dose in Triumeq may not be high enough in those cases.
