Thyroid Extract and Gentian Violet (OTC drug)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

Oral Drugs

Why this applies to Gentian Violet (OTC drug)

Gentian Violet (OTC drug) falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.
Severity Minor Likelihood Likely Evidence A

Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the good news: this one really shouldn't worry you much. The interaction on file is about oral thyroid hormone absorption being thrown off by foods and other swallowed products. Gentian violet, though, is something you almost always use on the skin or mouth as a topical dye and antiseptic (for things like minor fungal infections or thrush). It is not swallowed for a body-wide effect, so it does not really compete with thyroid extract in your gut.

Because the two are used in such different ways, I would not expect taking thyroid extract to change how gentian violet works on the skin, or the other way around. If you ever use a swallowed form of any product, just space it away from your thyroid dose and check with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Gentian Violet (OTC drug) page

“Gentian violet is the purple over-the-counter dye used against thrush and fungal skin infections, and its supplement list deserves genuine care, not a quick skim. Twenty ingredients interact, and the lone major one, activated charcoal, should be your starting point: it soaks up many medicines and can cut the amount that reaches the body.”

About Thyroid Extract

What is Thyroid Extract?

Thyroid Extract
  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Weight management
  • Sluggish metabolism
  • General thyroid support

Thyroid extract supplements are made from dried animal thyroid gland and may contain real thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), but the amounts in over-the-counter products are not standardized and can be unpredictable. Self-treating a thyroid problem with these supplements can be risky, so always work with a doctor or pharmacist and use prescription thyroid medicine when treatment is needed.
