Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the gist for these two. When you take a thyroid extract by mouth, having other oral medicines or food in your stomach at the same time can grab onto the thyroid hormone and keep some of it from being absorbed. Olsalazine (Dipentum) is one of those oral medicines that could share the stomach at the wrong moment. The concern isn't that olsalazine becomes dangerous, it's that your thyroid hormone may not get absorbed as well, which over time could leave a thyroid problem undertreated (think fatigue, feeling cold, or sluggishness).

This is a minor issue and easy to manage with timing. A simple fix many people use is taking thyroid hormone on an empty stomach, well before other medicines. Since over-the-counter thyroid extract isn't standardized, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before mixing these.
