Risedronate falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs in the opposite direction from what you might expect. Risedronate doesn't change your thyroid extract, but both products are very picky about an empty stomach. Risedronate is already poorly absorbed, so it has to be taken first thing in the morning with plain water, then you wait at least 30 minutes (or longer for the DR form) before eating or taking anything else. Thyroid extract has the same empty-stomach rule.

If you swallow them together, they can compete and you may absorb less of one or both, meaning weaker bone protection or unsteady thyroid levels. This is a timing issue, not a dangerous reaction. Ask your pharmacist to help you space them out so each one works.

What Is Risedronate Used For?

Brand name: Actonel DR

Risedronate sodium tablets are used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, treat osteoporosis in men to increase bone mass, and treat and prevent osteoporosis caused by long-term steroid (glucocorticoid) use in both men and women. They are also used to treat Paget's disease of bone — a condition where bones break down and rebuild abnormally, becoming enlarged and weakened.

Risedronate sodium delayed-release tablets (brands Atelvia and Risedronate Sodium delayed-release) are approved specifically for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis only — not for the other uses listed above.
