Here's the simple version: tragacanth is a plant gum that swells into a thick, slippery gel when it hits water. That gel can grab onto pills in your stomach and gut, which may slow down or change how much of an oral medicine your body actually absorbs. With Crofelemer (Fulyzaq, Mytesi), the worry is that the gel could blunt how well the drug works to calm your diarrhea, or it could shift its absorption in either direction.

I want to be honest with you, though: this is a theoretical concern based on how the gum behaves, not proven harm. A practical fix is simple spacing. Take your Crofelemer first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any tragacanth. If you take it regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Crofelemer Used For?

Brand names: Fulyzaq, Mytesi

Mytesi (crofelemer) is approved to provide symptomatic relief of non-infectious diarrhea in adult patients with HIV/AIDS who are taking antiretroviral therapy.

It is not intended to treat diarrhea caused by an infection. Before starting Mytesi, a doctor will rule out infectious causes of diarrhea.
