Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's some good news that should put your mind at ease. The concern with tragacanth is that its gel-forming fiber can sometimes interfere with how oral medications get absorbed in your gut. But Goserelin (Zoladex) isn't a pill you swallow. It's a small implant placed under the skin of your belly, where it slowly releases the medication directly into your bloodstream.

Because Goserelin never travels through your stomach or intestines, tragacanth's thickening gel has no real chance to affect it. This particular warning is aimed at oral drugs, so it doesn't truly apply to your injectable implant. As always, if you have any questions about your cancer or hormone treatment, your oncology team or pharmacist is the best place to double-check.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Goserelin Implant Used For?

Brand name: Zoladex

  • Goserelin implant is used in combination with radiation therapy and other medications to treat localized prostate cancer and is used alone to treat the symptoms associated with advanced prostate cancer. It is also used to treat advanced breast cancer in certain women. It is also used to manage endometriosis (a condition in which the type of tissue that lines the uterus [womb] grows in other areas of the body and causes pain, heavy or irregular menstruation [periods], and other symptoms) and to help with the treatment of abnormal bleeding of the uterus. Goserelin implant is in a class of medications called gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists. It works by decreasing the amount of certain hormones in the body.
