ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Naratriptan
Naratriptan falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Tragacanth interacts with.
Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the deal with mixing tragacanth and your migraine pill, Naratriptan (Amerge). Tragacanth is a gummy fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. That gel can sometimes grab onto a pill you swallow around the same time and slow down or change how much of it your body absorbs. With Naratriptan, that could in theory mean it kicks in slower or you get a bit less relief from your migraine, or in some cases more. We just don't have hard human studies here, so this is more of a theoretical, play-it-safe concern.
The simple fix is timing. A practical habit is to take your Naratriptan first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before having tragacanth. If you use it regularly, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Naratriptan page
“Naratriptan (Amerge) treats migraines by acting on serotonin receptors, so it matters that 20 of the 50 supplements flagged for it can also push serotonin activity higher, raising the risk of serotonin syndrome, a dangerous overload. This is a list to approach with real caution, not a quick skim.”

About Tragacanth
What is Tragacanth?
- Soothing sore throat and cough
- Digestive upset and constipation
- Thickening or binding agent in products
- Skin soothing in creams and pastes
Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
About Naratriptan
What Is Naratriptan Used For?
Brand name: Amerge
Naratriptan tablets are used to treat migraine headaches — with or without aura — when a migraine is already happening. It is a rescue treatment, meaning you take it during an attack, not daily to prevent migraines.
It is not used to prevent migraines, and it has not been proven effective for cluster headaches. Naratriptan should only be used when a doctor has clearly confirmed a diagnosis of migraine.
