Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's a bit of good news for your peace of mind. The concern on file is about tragacanth's gummy, gel-forming fiber slowing or changing how an oral medication gets absorbed from the gut. But carboplatin (Paraplatin) isn't taken by mouth, it's given as an infusion straight into a vein by your care team. That means it skips the digestive tract entirely, so the swelling gel from tragacanth has nothing to grab onto and shouldn't affect how much carboplatin reaches your body.

This warning is also theoretical, based on how the fiber behaves rather than real cases. Still, while going through chemo, it's always smart to run any supplement past your oncologist or pharmacist first, just to be safe.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Carboplatin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Paraplatin

Carboplatin Injection is used to treat advanced ovarian cancer. It is approved for use as part of an initial combination chemotherapy regimen — one established combination pairs it with cyclophosphamide. It has also been used as a single agent in patients with recurrent ovarian cancer after prior treatment.

Because two brands are available — Kyxata and Paraplatin — your care team will specify which product you receive. Both are given by intravenous (IV) infusion in a clinical setting under the supervision of a physician experienced in cancer chemotherapy.
