Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: tragacanth is a gum that swells into a thick, slippery gel in your stomach. When you take a swallowed pill like lamivudine close to it, that gel could in theory grab onto the medicine and change how much of it gets absorbed into your blood. The concern here is mostly about the gel's physical bulk, not about your liver enzymes, and lamivudine is an active drug (not a prodrug that needs to be switched on).

This is a theoretical worry based on how the fiber behaves, not from real studies on lamivudine, so don't panic. Still, with an HIV or hepatitis B medicine, keeping blood levels steady matters. A safe habit is to space them apart, taking tragacanth about 30 to 60 minutes after your lamivudine, and check with your pharmacist if you use it regularly.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Lamivudine Used For?

Brand names: Epivir, Epivir-HBV

Epivir (lamivudine) oral solution and tablets, and lamivudine tablets for HIV-1, are used in combination with other antiviral medicines to treat HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus type 1) infection. These products are dosed for HIV-1 and are not appropriate for treating hepatitis B alone.

Lamivudine tablets (HBV) — a separate, lower-dose product — are used to treat chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults who have evidence of active viral replication and liver inflammation. This HBV-specific product is generally considered only when other antiviral options with a lower risk of resistance are not available or appropriate.
