Theoretically, tragacanth might alter absorption of oral drugs.
Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here is some good news that takes the worry out of this one. The Relenza you breathe in for the flu is an inhaled powder, not a pill you swallow. The concern on file is that tragacanth's gel-forming fiber might change how oral (swallowed) drugs are absorbed from the gut. Since zanamivir goes straight into your lungs through the inhaler, your stomach and that fiber gel really are not part of the picture.

So this listed interaction does not meaningfully apply to inhaled Relenza. This is a theoretical concern based on how the gum behaves, not a proven problem. Still, if you take other swallowed medicines, spacing tragacanth 30 to 60 minutes after them is a smart habit. When in doubt, run your full list past your pharmacist.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Zanamivir Oral Inhalation

What Is Zanamivir Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand name: Relenza

Relenza (zanamivir) inhalation powder is used to treat uncomplicated, acute influenza A and B in adults and children aged 7 and older — but only when symptoms have been present for no more than 2 days. The sooner treatment starts, the better.

Relenza is also used to help prevent (prophylax) influenza in adults and children aged 5 and older, including in household settings where someone is sick and in broader community outbreaks. It is not a substitute for your annual flu vaccine, and it has not been shown to prevent influenza in nursing home residents.
