Why this applies to Atomoxetine

Atomoxetine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Valerian interacts with.

Valerian does not seem to have a clinically relevant effect on levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
Although some in vitro evidence suggests that valerian affects CYP2D6, clinical pharmacokinetic (PK) studies show that valerian is unlikely to affect the CYP2D6 enzyme. In one PK study, taking valerian 1000 mg (providing about 11 mg valerenic acid) nightly for 14 days did not affect the metabolism of dextromethorphan, a CYP2D6 substrate. In another PK study, taking valerian 125 mg three times daily for 28 days did not affect metabolism of debrisoquine, an accepted CYP2D6 probe-substrate.

Here's the good news on pairing valerian with atomoxetine (Strattera). Atomoxetine is cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP2D6, and early test-tube studies hinted that valerian might block that enzyme. If it actually did, atomoxetine could build up and you might feel more side effects like a faster heartbeat, trouble sleeping, dry mouth, reduced appetite, or feeling jittery.

But when researchers tested this in real people, valerian did not meaningfully change how the body handles CYP2D6 drugs. So this interaction looks unlikely to cause a real problem. Since both can affect how alert or sleepy you feel, it's still smart to mention valerian to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

What Is Atomoxetine Used For?

Brand name: Strattera

Atomoxetine — available as capsules (Atomoxetine, Atomoxetine Hydrochloride, Strattera) and as an oral solution (Atomoxetine Hydrochloride, Atoncy) — is approved for the treatment of ADHD in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older. It is meant to be part of a total treatment program that may also include psychological, educational, and social supports.

ADHD is diagnosed when persistent symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity cause meaningful problems in daily life — at school, at work, or at home — in more than one setting. Atomoxetine is not approved to treat major depressive disorder.
