Ponatinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Zedoary interacts with.

Theoretically, zedoary might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In-vitro research shows that a methanol extract of zedoary strongly inhibits the CYP3A4 metabolism of the tyrosine kinase inhibitors lapatinib and sorafenib, and to a lesser extent, gefitinib.

Here's the gist for ponatinib (Iclusig). Your liver clears this drug using an enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dish studies, zedoary appears to block that same enzyme. If that holds true in people, ponatinib could be cleared more slowly and build up in your body, which may push its effects, and its side effects, higher than expected.

With ponatinib that matters, because higher levels can mean more risk of things like high blood pressure, blood clots, liver strain, and low blood counts. I want to be honest though: this is theoretical, based only on test-tube work with similar cancer drugs, not real patients. Still, ponatinib is a serious medication, so please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding zedoary supplements.

About Ponatinib

What Is Ponatinib Used For?

Brand name: Iclusig

Ponatinib, sold as Iclusig, treats two types of blood cancer in adults. For Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL), Iclusig is used in combination with chemotherapy for newly diagnosed patients, or as a single agent for patients who cannot take other kinase inhibitors or who have a specific mutation called T315I. For chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), Iclusig treats chronic phase CML when at least two prior kinase inhibitors have not worked or caused intolerable side effects, accelerated or blast phase CML when no other kinase inhibitors are suitable, and any phase of CML with the T315I mutation.

Iclusig is not approved or recommended for newly diagnosed chronic phase CML.
