Zedoary and Rifampin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Rifampin

Rifampin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Zedoary interacts with.

Theoretically, zedoary might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In-vitro research shows that a methanol extract of zedoary strongly inhibits the CYP3A4 metabolism of the tyrosine kinase inhibitors lapatinib and sorafenib, and to a lesser extent, gefitinib.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the idea on file: zedoary may block an enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps your body clear certain medicines. In theory, slowing that enzyme could let a drug build up to higher levels. For rifampin, that might mean a bit more chance of side effects like nausea, stomach upset, or liver irritation if levels crept up.

But I want to be straight with you: this is theoretical only, based on lab dish studies (not people), and it was strongest for cancer drugs, not rifampin. Rifampin itself is actually a powerful enzyme booster that can change how lots of other medicines work, so it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding zedoary, especially as a concentrated supplement rather than a pinch of spice.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).

About Rifampin

What Is Rifampin Used For?

Brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor

Rifampin treats all forms of tuberculosis. It is always used as part of a combination of TB medicines, not on its own.

It also treats asymptomatic meningococcal carriers. These are people who carry the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis in the nose and throat without being sick. Rifampin is not used to treat an actual meningococcal infection.

Rifampin capsules are taken by mouth. Rifadin IV and Rifampin for Injection are given through a vein for the initial treatment and retreatment of tuberculosis when the medicine cannot be taken by mouth.
