HelloPharmacist Scorecard of AHCC 500 mg by Source Naturals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
AHCC 500 mg is built around shiitake mycelia extract — the root structure of shiitake mushrooms — plus dextrin and alpha-cyclodextrin as components of its proprietary blend. The supplement comes in a gelatin capsule with magnesium stearate and microcrystalline cellulose as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for shiitake extract in this product isn't established for most uses we track. For dental plaque, it's rated possibly ineffective.
For cancer, chemotherapy-related anemia, chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting, atherosclerosis, and breast cancer, there's insufficient reliable evidence to know whether it works — the research either isn't there yet or isn't strong enough to draw conclusions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Shiitake consumed as cooked food is generally well tolerated. However, this supplement contains a concentrated extract, and safety data for supplement doses is limited, so caution is warranted.
The most common side effects from oral use are abdominal discomfort, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Rarely, raw shiitake can cause shiitake dermatitis — a distinctive skin rash that may come with whole-body symptoms.
People who handle shiitake mushrooms extensively have reported allergic skin reactions, asthma, and in rare cases, a serious lung condition (hypersensitivity pneumonitis) from spore inhalation. Pregnancy and lactation safety data isn't on file for shiitake extract at supplement doses.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Immunosuppressants (used after transplant or for autoimmune disease) are the top concern — shiitake may reduce their effectiveness. Also check any drug metabolized by the CYP2D6 pathway, including certain antidepressants and antipsychotics, as shiitake theoretically could speed up how fast your body clears them.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
AHCC might appeal to someone looking for an immune-support supplement, but the evidence for most claims is thin. If you take an immunosuppressant, blood pressure medication, antidepressant, or antipsychotic, check your exact drugs with our tool first.

Preliminary research indicates that AHCC may significantly increase Natural Killer (NK) Cell activity. There is also evidence to suggest that AHCC may increase macrophage activity, enhance cytokine production, and support the healthy functioning of the liver as well as act as an antioxidant.
