HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Ashwagandha + Theanine by ProCaps
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: L-Theanine and Ashwagandha Root Extract. L-Theanine is an amino acid that may help with focus and calm.
Ashwagandha is a traditional herb that's been studied for its potential to ease stress, anxiety, and sleep troubles. The capsules also contain plant cellulose as an inactive ingredient.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Theanine appears possibly effective for cognitive function, though evidence for age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, and anxiety disorders isn't established enough to rate. Ashwagandha shows more promising evidence — it's possibly effective for insomnia, anxiety, stress, and generalized anxiety disorder.
However, evidence for bipolar disorder is insufficient. The combination here targets relaxation and mental clarity, but your results will depend on the individual ingredients and your own body.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Theanine is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, though long-term safety hasn't been thoroughly studied. The most common side effects are headaches, drowsiness, and vivid dreams.
Ashwagandha is also generally well tolerated short-term, but like theanine, long-term safety data are limited. Rare serious concerns include liver damage and, in one case report, intracranial bleeding — though these are uncommon.
More typical side effects are mild digestive upset, nausea, and drowsiness. For pregnancy: the safety data advise against both ingredients during pregnancy, as ashwagandha has traditionally been thought to risk miscarriage and theanine lacks sufficient safety information.
For breastfeeding: there isn't enough data for either ingredient, so it's best to avoid them while nursing. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you're pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Double-check with your pharmacist before starting if you take blood pressure medications (both ingredients may lower BP further), benzodiazepines or other sleep/anxiety drugs (ashwagandha boosts their sedative effects), diabetes medications (ashwagandha may lower blood sugar), thyroid hormone like levothyroxine, immunosuppressants, or any drug that stresses your liver. Also mention any medications processed through your liver's CYP1A2 enzyme.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help with stress, sleep, and focus if you're not on blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid, or sedating medications. If you take any prescription drug, especially one for blood pressure, sleep, anxiety, diabetes, thyroid function, or immune suppression, check it against the tool on this page first.

Formula
Standardized root extract with theanine
Ashwagandha + Theanine offers a unique blend of standardized ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) root extract combined with L-theanine, to support relaxation and calming focus. Ashwagandha has long been utilized in traditional Indian Ayurvedic health practices for maintaining general well-being, and improving vitality, for thousands of years. Ashwagandha is one of the most well-known adaptogens, which help to support the body's ability to resist the effects of everyday stress and promote normal physiological functioning during times of stress. In fact, the plant's species name, "somnifera" is Latin for "sleep-inducing," which aptly describes ashwagandha's relaxing properties. Our ashwagandha is especially rich in withanolides, ashwagandha's key beneficial compounds that have been shown to have antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. Modern research supports ashwagandha's ability to help promote healthy levels of the stress hormone cortisol, while helping to balance mood. Theanine promotes the production of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, which support relaxation and calm. Theanine is often used to reduce the uncomfortable effects of caffeine and to support a relaxed state. Our Ashwagandha + Theanine is of the highest quality to ensure the mood-balancing, calm relaxed focus and stress-relieving benefits, while promoting overall well-being and vitality.

Ashwagandha + Theanine by ProCaps Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Ashwagandha + Theanine by ProCaps contains two ingredients that both interact with medications.
Altogether, these interactions span 1,351 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-Theanine's most serious concern is with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) — it may lower blood pressure further, raising the risk of dizziness or fainting. Theanine also has minor theoretical interactions with sedatives and drugs that affect serotonin, though clinical evidence of harm is limited.
Ashwagandha carries several Moderate-severity interactions. It may deepen the sedative effects of sleeping pills, anti-anxiety drugs, and benzodiazepines like Valium or Klonopin.
It can also lower blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when combined with diabetes medications, raise blood pressure medication effects, boost thyroid hormone levels (important if you take levothyroxine or similar drugs), and theoretically interfere with medications that suppress your immune system. Ashwagandha has also been linked to liver damage in rare cases, so combining it with other drugs that stress the liver warrants caution.
It may also speed up how your body processes certain medications (CYP1A2 substrates), potentially reducing their effectiveness.
Before you start this product, use the medication checker below to verify your exact prescriptions against these interactions.

Concomitant use of ashwagandha with thyroid hormones may cause additive therapeutic and adverse effects. Preliminary clinical research and animal studies suggest that ashwagandha boosts thyroid hormone synthesis and secretion. In one clinical study, ashwagandha increased triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) levels by 41.5% and 19.6%, respectively, and reduced serum TSH levels by 17.4% from baseline in adults with subclinical hypothyroidism.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, ashwagandha might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that ashwagandha extract induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, ashwagandha might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that ashwagandha extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Serotonergic Drugs
Some animal studies have reported that ashwagandha can enhance serotonergic transmission by altering certain serotonin (5-HT) receptors. However, there is no evidence to suggest that ashwagandha increases the risk of serotonin-related effects, and there have been no published case reports of serotonin syndrome when combined with other serotonergic drugs. Nevertheless, due to the lack of extensive studies on the matter and the fact that ashwagandha appears to affect serotonergic pathways, it would be prudent to exercise caution when combining it with drugs that affect serotonin. L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
