Betaine hydrochloride (HCl) is a source of stomach acid that may support your digestive environment. The capsule itself is the only inactive ingredient.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Lactase is effective for lactose intolerance, the difficulty digesting milk sugar. For the other ingredients and uses — lipase for inflammatory bowel disease or general dyspepsia, pepsin and protease for protein digestion, and betaine hydrochloride for various digestive and other conditions — the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate their effectiveness.
That means the data either isn't established or hasn't been well studied for those purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lipase and lactase are generally well tolerated when used as directed. Pepsin and protease may cause digestive upset or allergic reactions in some people.
Betaine hydrochloride can irritate the stomach and is not safe for people with ulcers, gastritis, or true acid reflux (GERD), as it increases stomach acid. Regarding pregnancy: there's not enough safety data on lipase, pepsin, protease, or betaine hydrochloride to recommend their use — talk with your doctor before taking this product if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Lactase is likely safe in pregnancy, but check with your doctor first. During breastfeeding, lactase acts only in the gut, but data on the other ingredients is limited.
