What’s inside
Full disclosure
This softgel contains one active ingredient: natural astaxanthin at 10 mg per capsule. Astaxanthin is a red carotenoid — a plant pigment — sometimes called a super-antioxidant because of how it behaves in the lab.
The softgel itself is made from gelatin, glycerol, purified water, soybean oil, and tocopherol (a form of vitamin E).
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for astaxanthin's ability to treat age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, or carpal tunnel syndrome is not established in the data we hold. That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means we don't yet have reliable evidence to rate it one way or another.
If you're considering astaxanthin for any of these uses, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what the current research actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin appears to be well tolerated overall in the studies we have, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools — a harmless color change from the astaxanthin itself.
A small number of trial participants at lower doses experienced increased bowel movements and red stools; at higher doses (40 mg daily), a couple of patients reported severe stomach pain. The safety data aren't robust enough to recommend astaxanthin during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so it's best to avoid it in those situations.
If you're pregnant or nursing and want to take it, talk with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check whether you use any drugs that are metabolized by your liver's CYP3A4 enzyme system (statins, blood pressure medicines, immunosuppressants, and many others) or by the CYP2B6 enzyme — both Moderate severity. These are both widespread drug groups, so use the medication checker on this page with your exact prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated, but it may affect how your liver processes certain medications — a theoretical risk that hasn't been confirmed in people yet. If you take any prescription drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 (a huge group), check your specific medications on this page before starting.

Astaxanthin 10 mg by We Like Vitamins Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Astaxanthin 10 mg by We Like Vitamins does interact with certain medications, based on laboratory research — though we should note that these effects haven't yet been seen in people taking the supplement.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The main concern is with drugs broken down by your liver's CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 enzymes (a long list that includes many statins, blood pressure medications, immunosuppressants, and others). In test-tube studies, astaxanthin appears to speed up how these enzymes work, which could lower the levels of these drugs in your bloodstream and make them less effective.
The severity here is Moderate for both enzyme systems.
Altogether, these interactions span 661 individual medications. Because the CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 effects have only been shown in the lab and not confirmed in actual patients, your exact risk depends on which drug you're taking and how sensitive it is to dose changes.
Run your medications through the checker on this page before you start.
