Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: astaxanthin 12 mg per softgel, a naturally derived carotenoid — a pigment found in algae and seafood that gives them their red or pink color. The softgel also holds several inactive ingredients — sunflower oil, gelatin, glycerin, caramel color, and purified water — that help deliver the astaxanthin and form the capsule.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold on astaxanthin for the conditions listed on the label — including age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome — is insufficient to rate it reliably. That means research to date hasn't been robust enough to confirm whether it works for these purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, but long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported orally are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools (which is just the pigment passing through); a small number of trial participants on lower doses reported increased bowel movements, and a few on much higher doses (40 mg daily) reported severe stomach pain.
There isn't enough safety data to know whether it's safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so it's best to avoid it during those times.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your pharmacist if you take any drugs broken down by the CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 liver enzyme pathways — astaxanthin may theoretically lower their levels, though this hasn't been proven in people yet. Many common medications use these pathways, so a quick review of your current prescriptions is worth the time.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astaxanthin is one to check with your pharmacist before you start, especially if you take any regular medications — the ingredient may alter how your liver processes drugs metabolized by common enzyme pathways. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a sensitive stomach, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Astaxanthin 12 mg by Nutricost Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Nutricost Astaxanthin 12 mg contains a single active ingredient — astaxanthin, a natural carotenoid — that has documented interactions with medications.
The main concern is that astaxanthin may theoretically lower levels of drugs your liver breaks down using the CYP3A4 enzyme pathway. This interaction is rated Moderate; it's been seen in test-tube studies but hasn't yet been reported in people taking this supplement.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Astaxanthin also theoretically may decrease levels of drugs metabolized via the CYP2B6 enzyme pathway, another Moderate interaction not yet observed in humans. Both of these effects stem from in vitro research showing astaxanthin can rev up these enzyme systems.
Altogether, these interactions span 661 individual medications. Because we can't predict which of your specific drugs might be affected without knowing your exact regimen, use the medication checker on this page to run through what you're taking before you start.
