Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Banaba 450 mg contains a single active ingredient: banaba extract. This plant extract is the sole component of the formula and is what carries the potential effects on blood sugar and blood pressure.

The capsule itself is made from gelatin and water, which are inactive ingredients used to hold and deliver the banaba.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Banaba product and its label doesn't state a use — see Banaba's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for banaba's effectiveness isn't solid yet. The data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for diabetes, prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), or metabolic syndrome.

That means studies so far haven't been convincing enough to call it effective for these conditions, though some research suggests it may affect blood sugar and blood pressure. Talk with your doctor about whether it makes sense for your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Banaba extract is generally well tolerated in short studies, but we don't know much about safety over the long term. In trials, some people reported dizziness, headache, tremor, weakness, stomach upset, and a few other symptoms — though it's unclear whether these came from banaba itself or from other ingredients in the formulas tested.

During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety data, so it's best avoided. The same goes for nursing — reliable safety information doesn't exist, so avoid use while breastfeeding.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Banaba.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 299 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking Banaba 450 mg, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood pressure medication (antihypertensives) or diabetes medication (antidiabetes drugs) — both could have stronger effects when combined with banaba. Also flag any medications that rely on OATP proteins for absorption, since banaba may reduce how much of those drugs your body takes in.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Banaba might be worth considering if you're curious about blood sugar support and your doctor gives the okay, but the evidence for it isn't strong yet. Because it can lower blood pressure and blood sugar, you really need to check with your own doctor or pharmacist before taking it — especially if you're on heart or diabetes medication.
