Atorvastatin Calcium falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP) — the group Banaba interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of banaba with substrates of OATP might reduce the bioavailability of the OATP substrate.
In vitro research shows that banaba inhibits OATP, particularly OATP2B1. OATPs are expressed in the small intestine and liver and are responsible for the absorption of drugs and other compounds.

Here's the gist for atorvastatin (Lipitor). Your body relies on little transporters called OATPs to pull atorvastatin into the gut and liver, which is exactly where the drug does its cholesterol-lowering work. Lab studies hint that banaba may block one of these transporters (OATP2B1). If that happened in real life, less atorvastatin might get absorbed, which could make it less effective at lowering your LDL ('bad') cholesterol.

The good news: this is purely test-tube research, not something seen in actual patients, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, if you're counting on your statin to protect your heart, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding banaba, especially since you're likely taking it for blood sugar already.

About Atorvastatin

What Is Atorvastatin Used For?

Brand name: Lipitor

Atorvastatin is used alongside a healthy diet to lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol, triglycerides (blood fats), and other harmful lipids, while raising HDL ("good") cholesterol. It treats primary hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), mixed dyslipidemia (mixed abnormal blood fats), hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides), and inherited conditions such as heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia — including in children aged 10 and older.

Beyond cholesterol control, atorvastatin is used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, revascularization procedures, and angina (chest pain) in adults with coronary heart disease or multiple risk factors for it — including adults with type 2 diabetes who have risk factors for heart disease even without a confirmed heart disease diagnosis.
