Here's the simple version: banaba and metformin both work to push your blood sugar down, just by different routes. Metformin lowers the sugar your liver makes and helps your body respond to insulin, while banaba's main compound (corosolic acid) may help your cells pull in glucose. Stack them together and those effects can add up, so your blood sugar could drop lower than you expect.

If it dips too low, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, irritable, or get a pounding heartbeat. The evidence here is fairly limited and short-term, so this isn't a reason to panic. Just don't add banaba on your own. Check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on your home glucose readings if you do start it.

Metformin is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is always used together with diet and exercise, not instead of them.

Metformin hydrochloride tablets and oral solution are approved for adults and children 10 years and older. Metformin hydrochloride extended-release tablets — including brands such as Fortamet, Glumetza, and Metformin Hydrochloride Extended Release — are approved for adults only.
