Ofloxacin falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP) — the group Banaba interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of banaba with substrates of OATP might reduce the bioavailability of the OATP substrate.
In vitro research shows that banaba inhibits OATP, particularly OATP2B1. OATPs are expressed in the small intestine and liver and are responsible for the absorption of drugs and other compounds.

Here's the gist: in lab dishes, banaba seems to block a transporter called OATP2B1 that helps your gut soak up certain drugs. If ofloxacin relies on that same doorway, taking banaba alongside it could, in theory, let a bit less antibiotic into your bloodstream. With an antibiotic, lower levels matter because you want enough drug on board to fully clear the infection, not just knock it back partway.

That said, this is very early evidence, only test-tube and animal work, so we honestly don't know if it plays out in real people taking ofloxacin. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor, especially since you shouldn't be skimping on an antibiotic. A simple fix may be spacing them apart.

About Ofloxacin

What Is Ofloxacin Used For?

Brand names: Oflox, Floxin, Floxin Injection, Floxin Otic

Ofloxacin is used in several different forms, each approved for specific infections. The otic (ear) solution treats outer ear infections (otitis externa) in patients 6 months and older, chronic middle ear infections with a ruptured eardrum (chronic suppurative otitis media) in patients 12 and older, and acute middle ear infections in children 1 year and older who have ear tubes. The ophthalmic (eye) solution — including the brand Ocuflox — treats bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) and bacterial corneal ulcers.

Ofloxacin oral tablets treat adults with mild to moderate bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia, skin and skin structure infections, gonorrhea, chlamydial infections of the urethra or cervix, mixed urethral/cervical infections, and acute pelvic inflammatory disease. The oral tablet is also used for acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and uncomplicated cystitis, but only when no other treatment options are available, due to serious risk concerns with this drug class.
