Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product has one active ingredient: banaba leaf extract (a dry form). The extract comes from the leaf of the banaba plant, used traditionally to support blood sugar and metabolic health.

The liquid also contains glycerin and water as inactive ingredients to deliver the extract.

Does it work?

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Banaba's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: blood sugar and metabolic support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Diabetes, Impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes), Metabolic syndrome, Type 2 diabetes, Hyperglycemia.
  • The closest evidence on file: Banaba is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Diabetes (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Banaba is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes), Metabolic syndrome.

The evidence for banaba isn't yet strong enough to confirm how well it works. The data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for diabetes, prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), and metabolic syndrome.

That means studies so far haven't provided solid proof of benefit—not that it doesn't work, just that we don't have the evidence yet to say.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Banaba extract appears to be well tolerated in short-term use, but we don't know much about long-term safety, so caution is warranted if you're thinking of using it regularly. Some people in trials reported dizziness, headache, tremor, weakness, upset stomach, and palpitations, though it's unclear whether these came from banaba, another ingredient in the product they tested, or a combination.

Because there isn't enough safety data, the safety information advises against use during pregnancy and while nursing—talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your individual situation if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Banaba.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 299 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood pressure-lowering medications (antihypertensives) or diabetes drugs (antidiabetes medications)—banaba can add to their effects. Also flag any medications that rely on a transporter called OATP for absorption, as banaba may reduce how well your body takes them in.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Banaba Alcohol Free may interest someone looking to support blood sugar or metabolic health, though the evidence isn't yet established enough to confirm how well it works. Be careful if you take blood pressure medications or diabetes drugs—banaba can add to their effects and lower your blood pressure or blood sugar too much.

Check your exact medications with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you're pregnant, nursing, or taking prescriptions regularly.

Banaba Alcohol Free by Hawaii Pharm: Common Questions

Does Banaba Alcohol Free by Hawaii Pharm interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Banaba Alcohol Free has a known interaction with 299 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Banaba Alcohol Free contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take Banaba Alcohol Free while I'm pregnant or nursing?
No—there isn't enough safety data to know if it's safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so the safety information advises against both. If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product.
Does banaba actually work for blood sugar or diabetes?
The evidence we have isn't strong enough yet to say for certain. The data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate banaba for diabetes, prediabetes, or metabolic syndrome—that means studies haven't confirmed its benefit yet, not that it doesn't work.
What are the side effects I might experience?
Banaba extract appears well tolerated overall. In trials, some people reported dizziness, headache, tremor, weakness, upset stomach, and palpitations, though it's not always clear if banaba itself caused these or another component in the product.
Is this product safe to use long-term?
Short-term use appears well tolerated, but long-term safety isn't well established. If you're considering regular, ongoing use, bring that up with your doctor or pharmacist.
Why is this a liquid instead of a pill?
This is an alcohol-free liquid extract, which some people prefer for easier absorption or if they have trouble swallowing pills. The active ingredient is the same—banaba leaf extract—delivered in a liquid form with glycerin and water.
