Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Based Shilajit contains one active ingredient: shilajit, a mineral-rich substance traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine. There are no other active ingredients in this product, and no inactive fillers or excipients are listed.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for shilajit isn't yet established for the uses we've reviewed in our data. It carries insufficient reliable evidence ratings for Alzheimer disease, sexual dysfunction, athletic performance, benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), and osteopenia (low bone density).
That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means the research so far hasn't been strong enough to make a confident claim either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Shilajit is generally well tolerated, though a rare case of allergy has been reported, including one instance where a person developed severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) after taking a higher dose. Headache has also been reported rarely in clinical studies.
During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety data, and there's a risk of contamination in unpurified products — the facts advise against use. While breastfeeding, safety is unknown, so it's best avoided.
Only use purified, tested brands, since unpurified products may contain heavy metals or other contaminants. One case report linked shilajit use during pregnancy to high blood pressure and electrolyte problems, though the role of shilajit couldn't be confirmed.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs (like metformin or glibenclamide), check with your pharmacist before adding this product — shilajit can lower blood sugar and increase your risk of hypoglycemia when combined with these medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Shilajit may be worth considering if you're interested in traditional mineral supplements, but the evidence for its claimed benefits isn't strong yet. If you take antidiabetes medication, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting — your blood sugar may need closer monitoring.
Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and stick with a purified, tested brand to minimize contamination risk.

Animal research shows this effect is real, and it's been seen when both were given together.

Antidiabetes Drugs
Taking shilajit with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Most human and animal research shows that shilajit can decrease fasting plasma glucose levels. In an animal model, shilajit 100 mg per kg daily enhanced the glucose-lowering ability of both glibenclamide and metformin when given in combination over a 4 week period. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
