Shilajit and Muraglitazar

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Muraglitazar

Muraglitazar falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Shilajit interacts with.

Taking shilajit with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Most human and animal research shows that shilajit can decrease fasting plasma glucose levels. In an animal model, shilajit 100 mg per kg daily enhanced the glucose-lowering ability of both glibenclamide and metformin when given in combination over a 4 week period. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Muraglitazar (Pargluva) is a diabetes drug that works to lower your blood sugar. Shilajit, in animal and lab studies, also seems to nudge blood sugar down on its own. So when you put the two together, the worry is that they could team up and push your blood sugar too low. That's called hypoglycemia, and it can leave you feeling shaky, sweaty, dizzy, confused, or unusually tired.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This concern comes mostly from animal and test-tube research, not solid human trials, so it's a possible interaction rather than a proven one. If you do take both, check your blood sugar more closely and let your doctor or pharmacist know before you start, since your dose may need a tweak.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Muraglitazar page

“I read this list with genuine care, because muraglitazar (Pargluva) lowers blood sugar to treat type 2 diabetes, and 239 of the 256 supplements here can push that same lever. Most add to its effect and raise the risk of hypoglycemia, meaning blood sugar dropping too low; a smaller share, niacin among them, push sugar up instead.”

About Shilajit

What is Shilajit?

  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Male fertility and testosterone support
  • General vitality and aging
  • Athletic performance
  • Cognitive support

Shilajit is a sticky, tar-like substance found in rocks of mountain ranges like the Himalayas, used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for energy and vitality. Human evidence is limited and mostly small or early-stage, so its real benefits are uncertain. Quality and purity vary widely, and contamination with heavy metals is a real concern, so choose tested products and talk to your pharmacist before use.
