HelloPharmacist Scorecard of BCAA Power Pina Colada by Labrada
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
BCAA Power Pina Colada contains 10 ingredients, with the active ones being branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) — leucine, isoleucine, and valine — plus supporting amino acid and electrolyte components. The product also delivers L-glutamine, an amino acid; sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin A; plus a fermented branched chain amino acid complex and a coconut water electrolyte complex.
The inactive ingredients are coconut water, malic acid, natural and artificial flavors, coconut oil creamer, tricalcium phosphate, sucralose, gum acacia, beta-carotene, and acesulfame potassium.
Does it work?
Not established
We hold no effectiveness data in our records for leucine, isoleucine, valine, L-glutamine for athletic performance or muscle recovery, or for the fermented amino acid and coconut water electrolyte blends. L-glutamine itself is rated Effective for sickle cell disease and Possibly Effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma — but not specifically for the muscle-building or recovery claims typical of BCAA supplements.
The electrolyte components (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium) support general health functions (sodium and potassium for nerve and muscle signaling, for example), but we have no data on whether this product as formulated is effective for its intended use.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-glutamine is generally well tolerated, though people with kidney or liver disease should use it only under medical supervision. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal — belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, gas pain, nausea, and vomiting, especially at high doses.
A small number of patients with bipolar disorder have reported mania or hypomania. There isn't enough safety data on L-glutamine in pregnancy and breastfeeding, so avoid supplement doses unless your doctor recommends it.
Sodium and potassium are generally well tolerated at normal dietary levels, though high intakes of sodium are linked to high blood pressure and cardiovascular strain, and potassium supplements can cause dangerously high levels in people with kidney disease. Calcium is generally safe at recommended amounts and is well tolerated orally, with common side effects including constipation, bloating, and stomach upset; calcium is Likely Safe in pregnancy and lactation.
Magnesium is generally well tolerated and Likely Safe in pregnancy and lactation, with common effects being diarrhea, nausea, and GI irritation. Vitamin A is generally safe at recommended amounts but can be toxic at high doses — it builds up in the body and very high doses can cause pseudotumor cerebri (swelling in the brain), liver toxicity, and birth defects; high doses should be avoided in pregnancy.

BCAA Power Pina Colada by Labrada Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
BCAA Power Pina Colada by Labrada contains several ingredients with documented medication interactions.
The most serious concern is calcium, which can significantly reduce blood levels of the HIV integrase inhibitors dolutegravir and elvitegravir — both Major-severity interactions — and can cause potentially life-threatening precipitation when given intravenously alongside the antibiotic ceftriaxone. Calcium also moderately reduces absorption of the thyroid hormone levothyroxine and the heart medication sotalol, and may reduce the effectiveness of the HIV drug raltegravir and the blood pressure medication diltiazem.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Sodium in this product carries Moderate interactions with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), which may become less effective at controlling blood pressure with high sodium intake. Sodium also interacts with lithium — a medication for bipolar disorder where changes in sodium intake can raise or lower lithium levels to dangerous degrees — and with corticosteroids, didanosine, sodium phosphate, and tolvaptan, all raising the risk of high blood sodium (hypernatremia).
Potassium has Moderate interactions with potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) — all blood pressure or heart medications — where excess potassium can cause dangerously high potassium levels (hyperkalemia). Magnesium can significantly reduce the absorption of levodopa/carbidopa for Parkinson's disease, and has Moderate interactions with skeletal muscle relaxants, potassium-sparing diuretics, calcium channel blockers, antacids, sulfonylureas (diabetes drugs), quinolone antibiotics, and bisphosphonates.
Vitamin A at high doses can interact with retinoids, liver-toxic drugs, warfarin (a blood thinner), and tetracycline antibiotics.
L-glutamine has a Moderate interaction with anticonvulsant medications — theoretically antagonizing their effects, though this hasn't been reported in humans. We could not check phosphorus, leucine, isoleucine, valine, or the fermented amino acid and coconut water complexes listed as ingredients.
Altogether, these interactions span 804 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to verify your specific prescriptions before starting this product.

For each ingredient in BCAA Power Pina Colada with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Vitamin A
Retinoids
Concomitant use of retinoids with vitamin A supplements might produce supratherapeutic vitamin A levels.
Retinoids, which are vitamin A derivatives, could have additive toxic effects when taken with vitamin A supplements.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, taking high doses of vitamin A in combination with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver disease.
The tolerable upper intake level (UL) is the highest level of intake that is likely to pose no risk of adverse effects. Doses of vitamin A above the UL can cause hepatotoxicity, ranging from elevated liver enzymes to liver failure.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, taking tetracycline antibiotics with high doses of vitamin A can increase the risk of pseudotumor cerebri.
Benign intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri) can occur with tetracyclines and with acute or chronic vitamin A toxicity. Case reports suggest that taking tetracyclines and vitamin A concurrently can increase the risk of this condition. Avoid high doses of vitamin A in people taking tetracyclines chronically.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, high doses of vitamin A could increase the risk of bleeding with warfarin.
Vitamin A toxicity is associated with hemorrhage and hypoprothrombinemia, possibly due to vitamin K antagonism. Advise patients taking warfarin to avoid doses of vitamin A above the tolerable upper intake level of 10,000 IU/day for adults.
Coconut Water Electrolyte Complex
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking coconut water with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Preliminary clinical research shows that drinking coconut water might lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
Quinolone Antibiotics
Many quinolone antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin, may have reduced absorption when taken with calcium-containing products due to chelation. It is generally recommended to take quinolones at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after consuming oral products that contain calcium. The calcium content of coconut water varies by product but is generally between 100mg-300mg per 1,000mL. Consumption of a small amount of coconut water may be safe but it would be prudent to avoid drinking large amounts at the same time as a quinolone antibiotic. Reference: https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2016/019537s086lbl.pdf
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking coconut water with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research suggests that coconut water might increase insulin levels and/or decrease blood glucose levels.
L-Glutamine
Anticonvulsants
Theoretically, glutamine might antagonize the effects of anticonvulsant medications.
Glutamine is metabolized to the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. Glutamate might have antagonistic effects with anticonvulsant drugs. However, this interaction has not yet been reported in humans.
