Bio.Me Barrier contains 9 active probiotic ingredients: the checked ones are Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus, plus several others (Bifidobacterium lactis W51, Bifidobacterium lactis W52, Lactobacillus brevis W63, Lactobacillus casei W56, Lactobacillus salivarius W24, Lactobacillus lactis W19, and Lactococcus lactis W58) for which we hold no interaction data. The powder also contains inactive ingredients like maize starch, maltodextrin, and inulin as carriers and prebiotics.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence is mixed. Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus are both rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome — meaning there's some promise, but the science isn't ironclad yet.
L. acidophilus is also possibly effective for Helicobacter pylori, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. For other conditions like hay fever, anxiety, and Alzheimer's disease, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say either way.
The effectiveness of the other strains in this blend isn't established in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus are generally well tolerated in healthy people. Side effects like bloating, flatulence, and mild stomach discomfort can occur when you take probiotics, but they're uncommon with these species in particular.
If you have a weakened immune system, check with your doctor first — live probiotics carry a theoretical risk in that situation. Pregnancy and lactation data are limited; the available information suggests B. bifidum may be possibly safe in pregnancy, but there's not enough to be certain.

Bifidobacterium bifidum W23
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Lactobacillus acidophilus W37
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
