Bio.Me S. boulardii contains one active ingredient: Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-1079, a live yeast strain. The capsule also contains an inactive ingredient, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, which is a binder.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence we hold shows S. boulardii is possibly effective for several types of diarrhea: rotaviral diarrhea (the kind caused by rotavirus), travelers' diarrhea, and diarrhea that develops after taking antibiotics. It's also possibly effective for two serious intestinal conditions: necrotizing enterocolitis in infants (a form of gut inflammation) and Clostridioides difficile infection (a severe bacterial infection of the colon).
Additionally, it's possibly effective for Helicobacter pylori, a stomach bacterium linked to ulcers. In all these cases, the evidence supports its use but isn't conclusive.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
S. boulardii is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. However, it should be avoided by people who are critically ill, immunocompromised (have a weakened immune system), or are in intensive care — especially those with central lines (catheters placed into a vein), on feeding tubes, or taking broad-spectrum antibiotics.
In rare cases, the live yeast has caused a bloodstream infection (fungemia) in these vulnerable patients. Rarely, people have reported mild digestive complaints like stomach cramps, gas, nausea, vomiting, or decreased appetite.
Safety data is limited, so speak with your doctor before use, particularly if you have any serious illness or immune system concerns.
