Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing: Saccharomyces boulardii is a live yeast, and econazole is an antifungal medicine designed to kill yeast and fungi. So in theory, an antifungal could harm some of the probiotic organisms and make the probiotic less effective. The concern runs toward your supplement, not your medicine, so econazole itself should still work fine for things like athlete's foot, jock itch, or ringworm.

In real life this is a small worry. Econazole (Spectazole) is a topical cream you rub on the skin, so very little gets into your gut where the probiotic lives. This interaction is theoretical and rated minor. Still, if you take both, a quick chat with your pharmacist can ease your mind.

What Is Econazole Topical Used For?

Brand name: Spectazole

Econazole nitrate is used to treat interdigital tinea pedis (athlete's foot — the kind that affects the skin between the toes), caused by specific fungi including Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Epidermophyton floccosum. It is approved for patients 12 years of age and older.

Econazole nitrate cream is also used for tinea cruris (jock itch), tinea corporis (ringworm), tinea versicolor (a patchy skin discoloration caused by yeast), and cutaneous candidiasis (a skin infection caused by Candida yeast).
