Saccharomyces Boulardii and Terbinafine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIFUNGALS

Why this applies to Terbinafine

Terbinafine falls under ANTIFUNGALS — the group Saccharomyces Boulardii interacts with.

Theoretically, taking antifungals with Saccharomyces boulardii might decrease the effectiveness of Saccharomyces boulardii.
S. boulardii is a live yeast. Therefore, simultaneously taking antifungals might kill a significant number of the organisms.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pair: Saccharomyces boulardii is a live, beneficial yeast, and terbinafine (Lamisil) is an antifungal designed to stop fungi from growing. So in theory, the medicine that fights fungus could also knock down some of the helpful yeast in your probiotic, making it work less well. This goes one direction only, it doesn't change how terbinafine treats your nail or scalp infection.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs work, not solid human studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. If you want the probiotic to do its job, a common-sense move is to space them apart during the day. Run your specific plan by your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Terbinafine page

“Liver strain is the risk that dominates this list. Terbinafine (Lamisil), the antifungal most people take for months to clear a nail infection, can injure the liver in rare cases on its own, and 38 of the 72 supplements catalogued here carry liver risks that could stack on top of that.”
