HelloPharmacist Scorecard of BioDophilus-FOS by Biotics Research Corporation
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
BioDophilus-FOS contains three active ingredients: two live probiotic bacteria — Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus (DDS-1 strain) — plus fructooligosaccharides (FOS), a type of prebiotic fiber. The probiotics are the live organisms; the FOS acts as food for them to help them thrive in your gut.
The product is a liquid formulation.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and respiratory tract infections. There isn't enough evidence yet to rate it for hay fever, Alzheimer disease, or generalized anxiety disorder.
Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for IBS, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis, though it appears ineffective for atopic disease. For FOS alone, the evidence we hold doesn't establish effectiveness for osteoporosis, constipation, diabetes, travelers' diarrhea, or high cholesterol.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both probiotic bacteria are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children, though those with weakened immune systems should check with their doctor first. The most commonly reported side effects are bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain, and other gastrointestinal discomfort — but in clinical trials, FOS at doses under 15 grams daily didn't increase these symptoms more than placebo.
Rare serious infections (sepsis, endocarditis) have been reported with Lactobacillus acidophilus, but these are extremely uncommon and mostly involve patients who were already critically ill. Pregnancy: both probiotics are rated possibly safe.
Lactation data isn't on file for either ingredient.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antibiotic drugs are the main concern — the live bacteria in this product may be killed off if taken at the same time, making the supplement less effective. Separate your antibiotic and this product by several hours.
No other medication interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
BioDophilus-FOS may help with IBS or certain infections if you're not taking antibiotics right now. If you are on an antibiotic, space out doses by several hours and ask your pharmacist about timing.
People with severe immune problems should get their doctor's okay first. Check your exact medications against the tool on this page before you start.
