Black Currant Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herbs Etc.
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Black Currant against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Low disclosure
This liquid contains one active ingredient: fresh black currant. It's prepared with 40% grain alcohol and purified water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold isn't established for black currant as a supplement. It's been studied for Alzheimer disease, liver disease, upper respiratory tract infections, cough, and atopic dermatitis (eczema), but the available data rates all of these as insufficient to say whether it works.
While black currants are nutritious as a food, concentrated supplements lack the research to confirm a benefit for any specific condition.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The berry itself is safe in food amounts, but concentrated supplements like this one are less studied and should be used carefully. In one trial of 2,154 people taking black currant seed oil at a higher dose, a small number reported mild diarrhea within 2–10 days of starting.
Pregnancy and lactation safety data aren't on file for this product — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check before taking if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel) — black currant may increase bleeding risk. Also check if you take phenothiazines (older antipsychotics) — there's a theoretical concern about seizure risk, though it hasn't been proven.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Black currant as a food is well tolerated, but concentrated supplements haven't been studied enough to confirm they work for specific conditions. If you take blood thinners, antiplatelet drugs, or older antipsychotics (phenothiazines), you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Black Currant by Herbs Etc. Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Black Currant by Herbs Etc. has documented interactions with two medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel). Black currant seed oil contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which can thin the blood itself, so combining it with these medications could increase your bleeding risk.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
There's also a moderate interaction with phenothiazines (older antipsychotic medications). The GLA in black currant seed oil theoretically raises the risk of seizures or lowers your seizure threshold when taken together, though this hasn't been proven in real patients yet.
Altogether, these interactions span 140 individual medications. Use the medication checker below to see if any of yours are affected, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this supplement.

fresh Black Currant
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, black currant seed oil might increase the risk of bleeding if used in combination with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a constituent of black currant seed oil, appears to have antiplatelet effects.
Phenothiazines
Theoretically, black currant seed oil might increase the risk of seizure in patients receiving phenothiazines.
Black currant seed oil contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). There is some concern that taking supplements containing GLA might cause seizures, or lower the seizure threshold, when taken with phenothiazines, although there is no evidence that black currant seed oil causes seizures. In one report, three patients with schizophrenia who had received phenothiazines developed EEG changes suggestive of temporal lobe epilepsy after starting treatment with GLA, although none experienced an actual seizure. In another report, two patients with schizophrenia who were stabilized on phenothiazines developed seizures when evening primrose 4 grams daily, which contains GLA, was added. One of these patients had a prior history of seizures.
