What’s inside
Partial disclosure
This powder contains 4 active ingredients. Sodium and potassium are electrolytes that your body needs in balance for nerve and muscle function.
The product also includes Chicken Bone Broth Protein Concentrate and Beef Bone Broth Protein Concentrate, which are protein sources. We hold no interaction data for these two protein concentrates.
The inactive ingredients are vanilla flavoring, guar gum (a thickener), and stevia leaf extract (a sweetener).
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The effectiveness data we hold is for sodium alone, not the product as a whole. Sodium is rated Likely Effective for cystic fibrosis and Possibly Effective for amphotericin B nephrotoxicity — a kidney injury from an antifungal drug.
For other uses listed — bipolar disorder and congestive heart failure — the evidence is insufficient to rate. We have no established effectiveness ratings for the bone broth protein concentrates or collagen blend in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sodium is well tolerated in normal dietary amounts up to the recommended daily limit of 2.3 grams, but excess sodium is linked to high blood pressure, heart strain, and kidney disease. Potassium is generally well tolerated from food and supplements, though high levels can cause serious heart rhythm problems, low blood pressure, and confusion.
Most common side effects of potassium supplements are abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, and gas. Sodium is rated Likely Safe and Possibly Unsafe in pregnancy and lactation — the data is mixed.
Potassium is rated Likely Safe during pregnancy and lactation. Normal dietary amounts of both minerals are appropriate; supplements require medical guidance, especially if you have kidney disease, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist if you take blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), lithium, water pills including potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), corticosteroids, or HIV medications like didanosine. These are the Moderate-severity interactions we've documented.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glancePartially disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take blood pressure medications, lithium, diuretics, or ACE inhibitors or ARBs, you need to check with your pharmacist before using this product — the sodium and potassium could interfere with those drugs. People with kidney disease should be especially cautious.
For everyone else, the amount of these minerals in one serving is worth discussing with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly in the context of your total daily intake and any health conditions you have.

Bone Broth Collagen Vanilla by Ancient Nutrition Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Ancient Nutrition's Bone Broth Collagen Vanilla contains sodium and potassium, both of which have documented interactions with medications.
Sodium is the primary concern here. It can reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) because high sodium intake raises blood pressure and may require increased doses to control it.
Sodium also interacts with lithium, a mood stabilizer — high intake can lower lithium levels, while low intake can raise them to toxic levels.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Sodium poses Moderate-severity interactions with several other drug types: corticosteroids (which cause the body to retain sodium, raising the risk of dangerously high sodium levels), didanosine (an HIV medication that already contains significant sodium), sodium phosphate bowel-prep solutions, tolvaptan (used to raise sodium in certain low-sodium conditions), and other sodium-containing drugs.
Potassium, the second active ingredient, also carries Moderate interactions. It can raise potassium levels to dangerous heights when combined with potassium-sparing diuretics (water pills), ACE inhibitors, or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) — all common blood pressure and heart medications.
Altogether, these interactions span 218 individual medications.
We could not check Chicken Bone Broth Protein Concentrate, Bone Broth Collagen Blend, or Beef Bone Broth Protein Concentrate for interactions. Before starting this product, run your exact medications through the search tool on this page.

For each ingredient in Bone Broth Collagen Vanilla with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
Potassium
Ace Inhibitors (Aceis)
Using ACEIs with high doses of potassium increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
ACEIs block the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and reduce potassium excretion. Concomitant use of these drugs with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia. However, concomitant use of these drugs with moderate dietary potassium intake (about 3775-5200 mg daily) does not increase serum potassium levels.
Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (Arbs)
Using ARBs with high doses of potassium increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
ARBs block the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and reduce potassium excretion. Concomitant use of these drugs with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia. However, concomitant use of these drugs with moderate dietary potassium intake (about 3775-5200 mg daily) does not increase serum potassium levels.
Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Concomitant use increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
Using potassium-sparing diuretics with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
