HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Boneset Chocolate Flavor by TerraVita
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Boneset Chocolate Flavor contains one active ingredient: boneset glycerite liquid extract. Boneset is a traditional herb used to support respiratory and immune function during cold season.
The extract also includes glycerin and chocolate flavoring as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for boneset in treating the common cold isn't established in the data we hold. Our monograph shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate how well it works for that purpose.
If you're considering it for cold symptoms, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's the right choice for you.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Boneset has limited safety data and contains plant alkaloids that may be toxic to the liver, especially at higher doses or with long-term use. Common side effects reported include nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.
The safety data advises against use during pregnancy due to potential toxicity and lack of safety research. It should also be avoided while breastfeeding because harmful alkaloids may pass to your infant and safety hasn't been established.
Short-term, cautious use under professional guidance is the safest approach if you choose to use it at all.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take any CYP3A4-inducing drugs — including seizure or mood-stabilizer medications like carbamazepine — check your exact medications with the tool below before using boneset. The interaction is Moderate severity and involves the way your liver handles both the drug and boneset's alkaloids.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Boneset Chocolate Flavor is not well-studied for cold symptoms, and it carries real safety concerns — particularly liver toxicity and nausea or digestive upset. It's not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
If you're on a CYP3A4-inducing medication, the interaction risk is even higher. Before taking this product, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's appropriate for you and whether it might affect your current medications.

Boneset Chocolate Flavor by TerraVita Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Boneset Chocolate Flavor by TerraVita contains one active ingredient — a boneset extract — that does interact with medications.
The most serious concern is with CYP3A4 inducers (Moderate severity), a group of drugs that speed up how your liver processes certain substances. Boneset contains plant alkaloids that your liver breaks down through the same pathway these drugs use.
When an inducer is present, it may increase the conversion of boneset's alkaloids to toxic forms, potentially raising the risk of liver damage.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Altogether, these interactions span 88 individual medications. We don't have a complete list of every CYP3A4 inducer here, but carbamazepine (Tegretol), used for seizures and nerve pain, is one example.
If you're on any medication your doctor says induces CYP3A4, or if you take seizure or mood stabilizers, run your exact drugs through the search tool on this page before starting boneset.

Boneset Glycerite Liquid Extract
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Inducers
Boneset belongs to the genus Eupatorium, and many species of this genus contain hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). Hepatotoxic PAs are substrates of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). Theoretically, drugs that induce CYP3A4 might increase the conversion of PAs to toxic metabolites. Some drugs that induce CYP3A4 include carbamazepine (Tegretol), phenobarbital, phenytoin (Dilantin), rifampin, rifabutin (Mycobutin), and others.
