How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Panax notoginseng is rated likely unsafe in pregnancy and should be avoided while breastfeeding. Chrysanthemum and Honeysuckle should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data.
Flos Sophorae (pagoda tree flower) is possibly unsafe in pregnancy and should be avoided while breastfeeding. We do not hold pregnancy or breastfeeding safety data for Prunella vulgaris or Water Banyan.
When taken orally, Panax notoginseng commonly causes dry mouth, flushed skin, insomnia, nausea, nervousness, rash, and vomiting. Honeysuckle has rarely caused allergic drug eruptions.
Chrysanthemum can trigger allergic reactions including hives, contact dermatitis, and asthma in sensitive people — an estimated 60% of Europeans may be allergic. Panax notoginseng's safety data are limited, and there is one case report of serious bleeding into the throat after taking it with another blood-thinning supplement.

Panax notoginseng
Aspirin
Theoretically, taking Panax notoginseng concomitantly with aspirin may increase the risk of adverse effects from both products.
Animal research shows that taking Panax notoginseng extract with aspirin increases blood levels of salicylic acid by approximately 50% and blood levels of Panax notoginseng by 75% to 196%. This effect may be due to increased absorption of both products.
Caffeine
Theoretically, taking Panax notoginseng may decrease the levels and clinical effects of caffeine.
Animal research shows that administering Panax notoginseng intravenously for 7 days before intraperitoneal injection of caffeine can decrease maximal blood levels of caffeine by 37%. This interaction is attributed to the ability of Panax notoginseng to increase the activity of cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzymes.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, taking Panax notoginseng might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Animal research shows that administering Panax notoginseng intravenously for 7 days before intraperitoneal injection of caffeine can decrease maximal blood levels of caffeine by 37%. This interaction was attributed to the ability of Panax notoginseng to increase the activity of CYP1A2.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, taking Panax notoginseng concomitantly with warfarin may increase the risk of bleeding.
Animal research shows that taking Panax notoginseng concomitantly with warfarin increases plasma warfarin levels, prothrombin time, and international normalized ratio when compared with control. In vitro research also suggests that Panax notoginseng may downregulate expression of cytochrome P450 3A4 enzymes, which may affect warfarin metabolism.
Honeysuckle
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, honeysuckle might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research shows that polyphenols extracted from honeysuckle can inhibit platelet aggregation.
Flos Sophorae
Caffeine
Theoretically, pagoda tree might reduce the clearance of caffeine.
Pagoda tree contains genistein. Taking genistein 1 gram daily for 14 days seems to inhibit caffeine clearance and metabolism in healthy females. This effect has been attributed to inhibition of the cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme, which is involved in caffeine metabolism. It is unclear if this effect occurs with the lower amounts of genistein found in pagoda tree.
