Broccoli Seed Extract Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Kirkman
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Broccoli Seed Extract against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: Broccoli Seed Raffinate and Sulforaphane Glucosinolate, both derived from broccoli. Sulforaphane is a sulfur-containing compound found naturally in broccoli that's thought to be responsible for some of the plant's health-promoting properties.
The supplement also contains several inactive ingredients—calcium ascorbate, microcrystalline cellulose, gellan gum, and hydroxymethyl cellulose—which serve as preservatives, binders, and capsule materials to hold the product together.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
For Broccoli Seed Raffinate, the evidence suggests it may be possibly effective for colorectal cancer prevention. For other cancers (bladder, breast, gastric) and for fibromyalgia, the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate whether it works.
Sulforaphane Glucosinolate is rated possibly effective for prostate cancer but possibly ineffective for Helicobacter pylori infection (a bacteria linked to ulcers). For allergic rhinitis (hay fever), asthma, and cancer in general, the evidence is insufficient to establish whether it helps.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Broccoli as food is safe for most people, but concentrated supplements like this one are less studied for long-term safety. The safety data advises caution with concentrated extracts unless your doctor approves.
Common side effects reported with broccoli seed and sprout extracts include loose stools, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and cramping, especially at higher doses. Allergic contact dermatitis from broccoli has been reported when applied to skin.
Sulforaphane in concentrated form is generally well tolerated, but reported side effects include bowel discomfort, heartburn, stomach upset, vomiting, headache, and in rare cases insomnia and irritability. A small number of patients with autism who took sulforaphane supplements experienced seizures; two cases occurred within 3 weeks of starting the supplement.
Weight gain (averaging 4 pounds over 18 weeks) was also noted in one clinical study of young males with autism. For pregnancy and lactation, both ingredients are rated Likely Safe, though concentrated supplement use during breastfeeding warrants caution due to limited data at higher doses.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, check with your own doctor or pharmacist if you're on any medications metabolized by CYP2A6, CYP1A2, CYP3A4, or CYP2E1 enzymes—these cover a very broad range of drugs. This includes blood thinners, certain cancer and heart medications, antidepressants, and many others.
The two active ingredients work differently on these enzymes, so it's not a simple yes or no; your pharmacist can look up your specific medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Broccoli Seed Extract may interest people looking for plant-based support for colorectal health, but the evidence for other conditions is thin. However, anyone taking prescription medications—especially those processed by your liver—should not start this supplement without clearing it with their own doctor or pharmacist first, since it can significantly speed up or slow down how your body handles many common drugs.
The side effects are usually mild (digestive discomfort), but seizures have been reported rarely in people with autism. Talk it over with your healthcare provider to make sure it's right for your situation.

Broccoli Seed Extract by Kirkman Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Kirkman's Broccoli Seed Extract contains two active ingredients—Broccoli Seed Raffinate and Sulforaphane Glucosinolate—that both interact with medications metabolized by your liver's cytochrome P450 enzymes.
Altogether, these interactions span 724 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The most serious concern is with Broccoli Seed Raffinate and drugs metabolized by CYP2A6 enzymes (Moderate severity). Research shows that eating 500 grams of fresh broccoli daily for 6 days can increase CYP2A6 activity by 135% to 550%, which means your body may clear these drugs much faster, reducing their effectiveness.
This ingredient also affects CYP1A2 substrates (Moderate severity) by potentially speeding up their metabolism by 10% to 200%.
Sulforaphane Glucosinolate—the other active ingredient—has a different pattern. It may actually increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 and CYP2E1 enzymes (both Moderate severity), meaning your body clears them more slowly, which could raise their levels in your bloodstream.
It also theoretically affects CYP1A2 substrates, though the direction is unclear since animal research shows it both inhibits and potentially increases the activity of this enzyme.
Before you start this supplement, check your exact medications with the tool on this page. If you take any prescription drugs—especially blood thinners, certain cancer medications, heart drugs, or antidepressants—your doctor or pharmacist needs to review whether this product is right for you.

For each ingredient in Broccoli Seed Extract with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sulforaphane Glucosinolate
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, sulforaphane might alter the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Animal and in vitro research shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP1A2 enzyme activity. However, its precursor glucoraphanin also appears to increase the expression of the CYP1A2 enzyme, which could lead to increased metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates. These effects have not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2E1 (Cyp2E1) Substrates
Theoretically, sulforaphane might increase the levels and effects of CYP2E1 substrates.
In vitro evidence shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP2E1 enzymes. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, sulforaphane might increase the levels and effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Animal and in vitro research shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity and downregulates its expression. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Broccoli Seed Raffinate
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, broccoli might reduce the levels and effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Pharmacokinetic research in humans shows that eating 500 grams of fresh broccoli daily for 6-12 days can increase CYP1A2 activity by 10% to 200%. Induction of CYP1A2 activity by broccoli is attributed to its glucosinolate constituents.
Cytochrome P450 2A6 (Cyp2A6) Substrates
Theoretically, broccoli might reduce the levels and effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2A6.
Pharmacokinetic research in humans shows that eating 500 grams of broccoli daily for 6 days increases CYP2A6 activity by 135% to 550%. Induction of CYP2A6 activity is attributed to its glucosinolate constituents.
