Safflower likewise shows insufficient evidence for heart disease, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and related kidney problems. Da Qing Ye is rated possibly effective for psoriasis but has insufficient evidence for respiratory infections, prostate cancer, ulcerative colitis, hepatitis, and aging skin.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Coleus is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, but it does carry cautions. It may lower blood pressure and isn't well studied for long-term use—so use it with care and guidance from your doctor or pharmacist.
Common side effects taken orally are constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting; one clinical trial reported loose stools in 1 of 15 patients, and retrospective reports suggest about a 10% rate of stomach upset, mostly diarrhea. Safflower oil in food is generally well tolerated, but concentrated flower extracts and high-dose supplements have less safety data.
There are at least 7 case reports of acute liver failure linked to overuse of safflower oil, though the doses that caused these cases aren't clear. Da Qing Ye is generally used short-term in traditional medicine, but human safety data are limited.
Because the product contains alcohol, be aware if you avoid alcohol for any reason. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Safety data are insufficient for all three active ingredients.
The facts advise against coleus and Da Qing Ye during pregnancy, and coleus during breastfeeding. Safflower flower may stimulate the uterus and should be avoided in medicinal amounts during pregnancy; beyond normal food use, there's not enough reliable information for breastfeeding.

Coleus
Calcium Channel Blockers
Theoretically, combining coleus with calcium channel blockers might increase the coronary vasodilatory effects.
Forskolin, a constituent of coleus, and calcium channel blockers both cause coronary vasodilatory effects.
Nitrates
Theoretically, combining coleus with nitrates might increase the coronary vasodilatory effects.
Forskolin, a constituent of coleus, and nitrates both cause coronary vasodilatory effects.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of coleus and anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
In vitro and animal research shows that forskolin, a constituent of coleus, can inhibit platelet aggregation and adhesion.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, combining coleus with antihypertensive drugs might cause additive blood pressure lowering effects and increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research shows that forskolin, a constituent of coleus, may lower blood pressure.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, taking coleus may affect drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 and increase the risk of adverse effects or reduce the effectiveness.
Research on the effect of coleus on CYP2C9 is conflicting. Some animal research shows that coleus extract can induce CYP2C9, while in vitro research shows that coleus can inhibit CYP2C9. Until more is known, advise patients that taking coleus might increase or decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, taking coleus might decrease serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that coleus can activate the nuclear receptor, pregnane X receptor (PXR), which results in increased expression of CYP3A4. Although the clinical significance of this is not known, use caution when considering concomitant use of coleus and other drugs affected by these enzymes.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, taking coleus may affect the metabolism of warfarin and increase the risk of adverse effects or reduce the effectiveness.
Some animal research shows that coleus extract can induce cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9), an enzyme that metabolizes warfarin. However, other in vitro research shows that coleus can inhibit CYP2C9. Theoretically, taking coleus with drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 might affect drug levels and the risk of adverse effects. Until more is known, advise patients that taking coleus might increase or decrease levels of warfarin.
Safflower
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
High doses of safflower oil might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Small clinical studies show that taking safflower oil, approximately 55 grams daily for 2-3 weeks, decreases platelet aggregation. However, taking lower doses of safflower oil, such as 5 grams daily for 4 weeks, does not seem to affect platelet function. In one case report, a 74-year-old male stabilized on warfarin developed urinary tract bleeding and an elevated INR after taking a safflower extract 20 grams daily for 14 days.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, safflower oil might alter the effects of antidiabetes drugs.
Some clinical research shows that taking safflower oil 10 grams daily for 3 weeks can increase fasting blood glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes. However, clinical research in patients with metabolic syndrome with or without impaired glucose tolerance shows that taking safflower oil 8 grams daily for 12 weeks reduces fasting glucose levels by around 8 mg/dL. Some clinical research also shows that taking safflower oil 8 grams daily for 16 weeks does not affect fasting glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes.
