What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Chlorela against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chlorela by Hard Rhino
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Hard Rhino's Chlorella is a single-ingredient powder containing chlorella, a type of green algae. That's it — no fillers or other inactive ingredients added.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for chlorella is mixed and incomplete. It's rated possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency, meaning there's some evidence it may help, but more research is needed.
For brain tumor, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), depression, and fatigue, the evidence isn't established enough for us to rate it either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated in the short term, but there's a catch: product quality and purity vary widely between manufacturers. The most common side effects are mild — allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, and darkened stool.
Most of these tend to ease after the first two weeks. Serious allergic reactions including anaphylaxis are rare but have been reported.
Safety hasn't been established long-term, so the product label advises against it unless your doctor specifically approves. If you're pregnant, the data suggests it may be safe, but there isn't enough information to know for certain — talk with your OB or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before using this product if you take warfarin (Coumadin) or other blood thinners — chlorella can reduce their effectiveness. Also mention any medications that increase sun sensitivity, since chlorella may add to that effect.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella might interest you if you're pregnant and managing iron deficiency and your doctor thinks it's appropriate. If you take warfarin or photosensitizing medications, you'll need to check with your pharmacist first.
Because long-term safety data is limited and product quality varies, this isn't something to take on your own without guidance from your doctor.

Chlorela by Hard Rhino Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hard Rhino's Chlorella can interact with medications, most notably blood thinners and drugs that increase sun sensitivity.
The biggest concern is warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner. Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K, which can reduce how well warfarin works — there's at least one case report of a patient's warfarin therapy becoming less effective after starting chlorella.
If you take warfarin, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chlorella may also have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs (medications that make your skin more prone to sun damage). Because chlorella itself can cause photosensitization — there are case reports of people developing swelling and rash on sun-exposed skin after taking it — combining it with these drugs theoretically increases that risk.
Altogether, these interactions span 337 individual medications.
We couldn't find interactions with other common drug categories, but that doesn't mean none exist. If you take any prescription medication, use the interaction checker below to search for your specific drugs before adding this supplement.

Chlorella
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
