What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chlorella, a freshwater algae, at 500 mg per capsule. The capsules also contain cellulose as an inactive ingredient (a binder).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence on chlorella is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency.
For brain tumors, depression, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and fatigue, the evidence isn't established — we don't have enough reliable data to rate it either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated short term, though product quality and purity vary widely between brands. The most common side effects are allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, photosensitivity, and stool discoloration — especially during the first two weeks.
Anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) is rare but has been reported. Because safety hasn't been fully established, avoid this product unless your doctor approves it.
There isn't enough data on file to know whether it's safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding — talk with your pharmacist or doctor for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications before taking this product if you're on warfarin or any blood thinner — chlorella can reduce how well they work. Also double-check if you take any photosensitizing drugs (medications that increase sun sensitivity), since chlorella may add to that effect.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella may help with pregnancy-related iron deficiency, but the evidence for other uses isn't clear. If you take warfarin or any blood thinner, or if you're on a photosensitizing medication, you need to check with us first.
Talk to your pharmacist before starting, especially if you have a history of allergies.

Chlorella 500 mg by Just Ripe Nutrition Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chlorella 500 mg by Just Ripe Nutrition does interact with certain medications.
The most serious concern is with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner. Chlorella contains vitamin K, which can reduce how well warfarin works — there's at least one case report of someone's warfarin therapy becoming ineffective after starting chlorella.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chlorella may also have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs (medications that make your skin more sun-sensitive). Because chlorella itself has been reported to cause photosensitivity — including swelling and rash on sun-exposed skin in five case reports — taking it with other drugs in this category could theoretically increase that risk.
Altogether, these interactions span 336 individual medications. If you take warfarin, any blood thinner, or any medication that increases sun sensitivity, run it through the checker on this page before you start.

Chlorella
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
