What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Chlorella against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: wildcrafted Chlorella extract. Chlorella is a type of freshwater algae that's been studied for various health uses, including supporting pregnancy-related iron levels and liver health.
The liquid is made with vegetable palm glycerin, pharmaceutical-grade alcohol, and purified Hawaiian water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Chlorella is possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency, according to the evidence we hold. For other uses—including brain tumor, fatty liver disease, depression, and fatigue—the evidence isn't established in our data.
That doesn't mean it won't help; it means we don't have reliable research supporting those claims yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated when taken short term, but product quality and purity vary widely from brand to brand. The most common side effects are allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, photosensitivity (sun sensitivity), and stool discoloration.
These tend to happen especially in the first two weeks. Serious allergic reactions including anaphylaxis are rare but have been reported.
Safety hasn't been fully established for long-term use; avoid this product unless your doctor approves it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting this product, check with your pharmacist if you take warfarin (a blood thinner)—chlorella can interfere with how it works. Also double-check if you're on any photosensitizing drugs (medications that increase sun sensitivity), as chlorella may add to that effect.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella may help with pregnancy-related iron deficiency, but it's not right for everyone. If you take warfarin or photosensitizing medications, talk with your pharmacist first.
Expect possible digestive upset in the first couple of weeks, and watch for any signs of an allergic reaction.

Chlorella by Hawaii Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hawaii Pharm's Chlorella is a single-ingredient liquid supplement that does interact with medications.
The most serious concern is with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner. Chlorella is high in vitamin K, which can reduce how well warfarin works—there's at least one case report of someone's warfarin therapy becoming ineffective after starting chlorella.
If you take warfarin, you'll need to talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chlorella may also have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs (medications that make your skin more sensitive to sunlight), which is a Moderate concern. Chlorella itself has been reported to cause photosensitization in a small number of people, who developed swelling and rashes on sun-exposed skin after ingesting it.
Taking it alongside other photosensitizing medications could theoretically increase that risk.
Additionally, please use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact medications before starting.

Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
