What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chromium, supplied as chromium GTF (glucose tolerance factor) at 200 micrograms per capsule. The capsule itself and the inactive ingredients — cellulose, magnesium stearate — are there to hold and deliver the chromium.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Chromium is likely effective for chromium deficiency, which is rare but real. For type 2 diabetes with poor blood sugar control, the evidence suggests chromium may be possibly effective.
However, for prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), schizophrenia, and high blood pressure, the evidence we hold rates it as possibly ineffective.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
At typical supplement doses, chromium is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are mild — gastrointestinal upset, headaches, insomnia, irritability, or mood changes.
Skin rashes and itching have been reported in some people, especially those with a contact allergy to chromium. Rare serious side effects (kidney or liver damage, muscle breakdown, low platelet counts) have been reported, usually at much higher doses taken long-term.
For pregnancy, small amounts from food or a prenatal vitamin are generally considered acceptable, but extra chromium supplements should be avoided unless your doctor recommends it. The same caution applies to breastfeeding — safety data on higher doses is limited, so it's best to talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking extra chromium while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your pharmacist if you take insulin or antidiabetes medications — chromium may lower blood sugar further. You should also verify the timing if you're on levothyroxine (a thyroid hormone), because chromium may reduce how much gets absorbed.
If you regularly take NSAIDs or aspirin, let your pharmacist know; they may increase chromium levels in your body.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chromium GTF may help if you have a documented chromium deficiency or poorly controlled type 2 diabetes, though the evidence for diabetes is modest. Chromium GTF 200 mcg by Jarrow Formulas Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chromium GTF 200 mcg by Jarrow Formulas does interact with several medication types, most notably blood sugar–lowering drugs.
The main concern is with insulin and other antidiabetes medications — chromium may add to their effects and raise the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Research shows chromium can increase how sensitive your body is to insulin, which is why this combination needs monitoring.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chromium also interacts with levothyroxine (the thyroid hormone in Synthroid and generics). It may bind to the drug in your gut and reduce how much gets absorbed — clinical data shows about a 17% drop in levothyroxine levels when taken together.
NSAIDs and aspirin may increase how much chromium your body absorbs, which could raise chromium levels in your blood. These are all Moderate or Minor interactions, but they're worth knowing about.
Altogether, these interactions span 178 individual medications. Please use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions before you start.

For each ingredient in Chromium GTF 200 mcg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
