Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
GNC Chromium Picolinate 200 contains one active ingredient: chromium, a mineral that plays a role in how your body manages blood sugar and processes carbohydrates. The capsule itself is made from gelatin, soybean oil, glycerin, and titanium dioxide.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Chromium is likely effective for treating chromium deficiency. For diabetes and prediabetes, the evidence is mixed — it's possibly effective for type 2 diabetes, but possibly ineffective for prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance).
The data we hold doesn't establish effectiveness for schizophrenia or high blood pressure.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium picolinate is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects are mild — gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Rare serious adverse effects including kidney and liver damage, muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), and low platelet counts have been reported, mostly at high or long-term doses. Skin rashes and itching have occurred in some people, especially those with a contact allergy to chromium.
For pregnancy, small amounts from food or a prenatal vitamin are considered safe, but extra supplement doses should be avoided unless your doctor recommends it. The same caution applies during breastfeeding — there's limited safety data on higher doses.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before taking this if you use insulin or antidiabetes drugs — chromium may lower your blood sugar too far. Also double-check if you take levothyroxine (Synthroid) for your thyroid, as chromium can reduce how much your body absorbs.
If you take NSAIDs or aspirin regularly, mention that too.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chromium picolinate may help if you have a chromium deficiency or type 2 diabetes, but it's not established for other conditions. If you take insulin, diabetes medication, or thyroid medication (levothyroxine), talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting — this supplement can affect how well those drugs work.
Stick to typical doses and avoid long-term high doses unless advised otherwise.

Chromium Picolinate 200 by GNC Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
GNC Chromium Picolinate 200 does interact with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with insulin and antidiabetes drugs — chromium may increase how sensitive your body is to these medications, which could lower your blood sugar too far (hypoglycemia). If you take insulin or diabetes medication, your doctor may need to adjust your dose.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chromium can also interfere with levothyroxine (Synthroid), a thyroid medication. Clinical research shows it may reduce how much levothyroxine your body absorbs by around 17%.
We recommend taking levothyroxine at a different time than chromium — ask your pharmacist for the best spacing.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and naproxen, as well as aspirin, may increase how much chromium your body absorbs and retains. This is a minor concern, but it's worth noting if you take these painkillers regularly.
Altogether, these interactions span 178 individual medications. Run your exact prescriptions through the checker below before you start.

For each ingredient in Chromium Picolinate 200 with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
